Many people want to protect the environment and save money. You may be able to save hundreds of dollars per year on utilities by going green. There are several ways that you can save money on your utilities by going green.
Add Insulation to Your Attic
According to the United States Department of Energy, many people are spending too much money on their energy bill because they do not have any attic insulation. If your home is properly insulated, then less cool air or heat will escape your home. Energy Star stated that you can save 20 percent on your energy bill by adding attic insulation.
Use CFL Bulbs
Compact fluorescent light bulbs can last up to 10,000 hours. They last longer than incandescent light bulbs because they use 75 percent less energy. If you want to get the most energy savings, then you will need to select a CFL bulb with an Energy Star label.
CFLs are better for the environment than incandescent light bulbs. Not only do they give off less energy, but they can also be recycled when they no longer work.
Install a Low-Flow Shower Head
The average person uses 17.2 gallons of water during their shower. If you have an older shower head, then you may be using more water than that. In fact, many shower heads release four or five gallons of water every minute. You can conserve water by using a low-flow shower head. Low-flow shower heads only put out 1.5 gallons of water every minute.
The cost of a low-flow shower head can vary. They can cost as little as $10 or as much as $200. One of the many great things about low-flow shower heads is that they are easy to install.
Install a Solar Panel
Sunlight is a natural energy source. Solar panels like those from Solar Source and similar companies are made up of photovoltaic cells. The sun has packets of energy that are known as photons. When the photons from the sun meet the photovoltaic cells, electricity is created. Solar panels are growing in popularity. In fact, it is estimated that one million homes will have a solar panel by the year 2020.
Going green is a great way to save money and reduce your carbon footprint. You can go green by adding insulation to your attic, installing a low-flow shower head and using CFL lights. You can also install a solar panel outside of your home.
