Being Environmentally Responsible Regarding Your Pet

Providing your pet dog or cat with the best food, shelter, and equipment doesn’t mean that you have to give up on being green.

There are not many things that can brighten your day like a pet can. However, before you get your furry companion, there are a lot of preparations you need to make. This is especially true for those who worry about their environment and the impact they have on it. Providing your pet with the best food, shelter, and equipment doesn’t mean that you have to give up on being green. There are many green products out there, so feel free to choose.

Adopt your pet

First of all, think about adopting an abandoned pet, instead of buying one. It’s both green, and a more humane thing to do. There are probably numerous local facilities dedicated to this cause, so ask around before you make a final decision. Also, consider neutering your pet, if you don’t want to – or can’t – take care of its offspring. Ask your vet anything you want to know about the procedure, and make sure it’s done in the safest and the most pain free- way possible. This is a routine procedure, so there’s no reason to worry.

Kitty litter

FleesKitty litter is made of bentonite clay. It’s a byproduct of strip mining, which is seriously damaging the environment. Luckily, there are alternatives. For instance, you can choose to buy only the litter made of recycled newspaper. There are also companies that make all natural litter out of wheat or corn. It’s a bit harder to find, and can be a bit pricier, but totally pays off.

Disposing of waste

There are a few things to have in mind when we talk about waste. First of all, gathering your pet’s waste is your responsibility. Make sure you have a bag ready with you, every time you go for a walk. These bags are usually made of plastic, which is obviously an environmental concern. If you shop around, you can find biodegradable bags as well. However, if those bags simply end up on a landfill, it doesn’t really matter whether they’re degradable or not. This, though, is not your problem. Only if you wish to go green all the way, you can find someone who collects animal waste, and makes further use of it. There are farmers who need it to make compost, or you can use it to make compost for yourself if you’re into gardening.

Every pet owner wants to provide their pet with only top-quality food. However, pet food is often made of meat industry’s byproducts. One way to ensure that your pet eats healthy, is to make them their food, yourself. However, if you don’t have enough time for this, there are other options. By using Net to Pet services, you can buy healthy food online, get it in bulk and have it delivered to your doorstep. This is maybe an even better option as it saves you time, and you can be absolutely sure that your furbaby gets only top-quality meals.

FoodFleas are a nuisance. They tend to be very annoying, but they can also put your pet’s health – and therefore life – in danger, if not treated properly. Getting collars designed to deal with this issue isn’t really a solution. They use pyrethrins, which are extremely bad for the environment. Flea comb, on the other hand, is a much better solution.

You’ll have to comb your pet once a week, but they will love it. If you can’t get rid of these pests, after a while, try to find a non-toxic shampoo based on natural insect repellents.

There’s a variety of products out there, designed for eco- friendly pet owners. These provide your pets with everything they need, but don’t damage the environment the way conventional products do.

Most of them can be found in your local stores, but don’t hesitate to search the web if you’re not satisfied with their offer.
