4 Innovative Ways to Fight for the Environment

Fighting for the environment is a thankless task much of the time, but it is just as important as it is difficult. Constantly coming up with new and innovative ways to advocate is the only way to make progress!

Environmental activism is a huge part of many people’s everyday lives, but many of the movement’s success stories get glossed over because there is simply so much to be done. Rather than becoming discouraged, advocates for a clean and healthy environment should continue to dream up new ways to positively impact the world around them. Here are a few ways to devote your life, or even just a few hours, to protecting and conserving the environment.

Eat Sustainable

The western world’s food pyramid and consumption culture is premised on many incorrect and unhealthy beliefs that are unfortunately extremely ingrained into the collective societal brain. Changing the whole system might seem intimidating, but true change begins at home with your own behavior: research practical plant-based substitutes for meat, inform yourself on where the fruits and vegetables that you buy are coming from, and cut out soda and candy from your everyday diet. An individual’s actions can change the world, and the minds of people around them.

Organize Community Events

Collective action is even more powerful than individual action, and communities are the building blocks of social change. As a small-scale community activist, you can organize a farmer’s market full of local foods and products, or organize trips to local farms so that people can learn how to grow their own food and gardens. Tree-planting sessions, creating spaces for community gardens, and volunteer trash collection duty are all great ways to involve the people in your life in environmental action.

Obtain a Master’s Degree in Environmental Law and Policy

For those activists who desire a system upheaval rather than incremental change at the local level, higher education is always the answer. A master’s in environmental law and policy is attained after the completion of a juris doctorate, and will enable the graduate to have a direct impact on public policy and national environmental ambitions. Though this much schooling might not be for everyone, fighting on behalf of the environment directly in the courts is one of the most proactive things that can be done for the preservation of the planet. Cultural shifts toward a sustainable economy are important, but until then, legal restrictions on the use and overuse of resources may be the best route.

Harness the Power of Technology

All environmental activism isn’t out on the street, in the courts, or in your local community. Mobile application developers are already testing out ways to streamline recycling and garbage disposal through the use of technology—studying tech and computing could be an innovative way to challenge the environmental status quo from your bedroom!

Fighting for the environment is a thankless task much of the time, but it is just as important as it is difficult. Constantly coming up with new and innovative ways to advocate is the only way to make progress!
