4 Things We Must Do to Move to a Sustainable Future

Buildings that have green spaces, energy-producing solar and wind technology and integrated food cultivation will be the future of urban dwelling.

As the global population increases, more people are living in cities. The importance of a sustainable future is finally reaching the forefront of public perception. A recent article in Forbes pointed out that cities of the future will need more green technology and more cooperation to reach sustainability.

Wean off Fossil Fuels

One of the most essential components of a sustainable future is to limit our dependence on fossil fuels. Renewable energy is the solution for a sustainable economy. There are a few countries already leading the way. Although China and the United States are the biggest consumers of fossil fuels, they are leading the world in renewable energy investment.

According to the Bloomberg New Energy Finance Report for 2014, China spent more on solar energy than any other nation. Denmark is a relatively small country, but in 2014 the country got 29.1 percent of its energy from wind turbines. Countries like Denmark are proving that renewable energy investment won’t hurt a country’s GDP.

Change Manufacturing

Another way that we can have a more sustainable future is to change the way we manufacture goods. The days of product inventories sitting on warehouse shelves is dwindling. The new trend is on-demand manufacturing. We need to produce and distribute goods the way nature does. In nature, there is no surplus. Everything is made as it is needed.

A technology that can help us achieve this goal is 3D printing. Companies like Amazon, Boeing and Google are already using 3D printing to quickly and efficiently make parts and inventories. When an order comes in, then the manufacturing process begins. This prevents goods from being produced and stored in a wasteful manner.

Private Industry Collaboration

A more sustainable future will require the collaboration of mutually beneficial industries. We can look to nature for our inspiration. In nature, the waste of one organism is the sustenance of another organism.

For example, a tire manufacturing company can pair up with a shoe manufacturer so that any excess rubber from the tires can be quickly shipped to the shoe company for recycling. Mutually-beneficial companies can change the way we produce goods, eliminate waste and save time.

New City Designs

One of the best things we can do to insure a sustainable future is to redesign major cities. The leaders in this endeavor will be graduates in the fields of electrical engineering, architecture and construction. Master’s in electrical engineering graduates of the future will better integrate communication systems and help builders complete projects faster and more responsibly.

Buildings that have green spaces, energy-producing solar and wind technology and integrated food cultivation will be the future of urban dwelling.

Necessity is the greatest driving force of all invention. We must come together globally and act locally if we are ever going to reach a sustainable future. Nations are leading the way and private companies are following suit. It’s up to like-minded individuals to pursue educational programs that can benefit the world. We can create a more sustainable future and there is no time like the present to do so.
