Here are top five ways to reduce your energy costs at home.
Sometimes your energy bill might come as a shock. It may seem like a fixed bill, but there are many things you can do to pay less. Here are the top five ways to reduce your energy costs at home:
Adjust your thermostat
Set your thermostat to 69 when you leave the house. Setting your thermostat at 60 when you are on vacation in the winter, also brings significant savings, but do not turn off your heat altogether. You don’t want your pipes to freeze. In addition, switch your thermostat to “auto”, not “on”. It keeps it from constantly running, which saves big bucks.
Replace your bulbs
Replace old bulbs with new compact florescent bulbs, which save more energy. CFLs last 8-10 times longer than incandescent bulbs and use much less energy, as well. You can find good deals on CFLs so you don’t have to feel like you are spending too much initially either.
Give your A/C a tune-up
By doing tuning up your air conditioner, you could qualify for a company rebate. Just check the company website of your brand of appliance. Also, make sure to clean and change your A/C filters once per month to keep it running smoothly. Another way to cool your home, is to plant tall plants and shrubs around your home, to cool your property significantly. This can also increase property value simultaneously.
Buy and replace old appliances with Energy Star units
These appliances are proven to save you money. Try to find appliances with advanced insulation and on-and-off power-saving switches. Refrigerators are huge energy guzzlers, so if you are unsure where to start, this is a good place. A good rule of thumb is, if the refrigerator is a 1990 model or older, it is time to look into purchasing a new one.
Consider installing high-performance windows
High-performance windows keep in heat, eliminate heat seeping, and cut down on bills significantly. Also be sure to track down any cracks or leaks in your doorways and add insulation. To find out if you have leaks, stick a piece of paper in your door and shut the door on it. If you can pull the paper without it ripping, then you are losing heat.
Making small changes in your home can make a big difference in your energy bill. You should also consider shopping for the best electric plan in your area, and you can visit Electricity Match to compare rates. Cutting down on energy costs can free up money for other things.
