Animal Actors Who Charmed the Celluloid Screen

From the beginning of the history of Hollywood, animals have been inevitable parts of the silver screen. Without the mention of some well behaved animals and their great trainers, history of movies in the industry would not be complete. Even in the era of graphical revolution and camera techniques, these animal actors have assumed large importance. Here we will introduce some of these animal actors of Hollywood who have made their roles memorable.

Actor Pal

Pal: This dog was a famous actor in the industry in the past. He was active in the industry from 1943 to 1954. He was trained by Rudd Weatherwax, a famous animal trainer of that time.  At the age of three, he acted in the film ‘Lassie Come Home’. Following that, he acted in around six more films and two TV shows. He died in 1958 at the age of eighteen.

Actor BambooHarvester

Bamboo Harvester: This palomino horse was become famous acting in ‘Mister Ed’ comedy series from 1961 to 1966. After that he struggled with a variety of ailments and was euthanized in 1970.

Actor Jiggs

Jiggs: This chimpanzee became famous by appearing in Hollywood Tarzan movies in the 1930s. He acted in films like ‘Tarzan the Ape Man’ and ‘Tarzan and his Mate’. He passed away due to pneumonia at the age of nine.

Actor Orangey

Orangey: This red tabby cat won the famous PATSY (Picture Animal Top Star of the Year) award twice. Her first PATSY win was in 1951 for her role in the film Rhubarb as the titular kitty. She won her second PATSY award in 1961. She acted in about 7 Hollywood films.

Actor Tia

Tai: This Asian elephant born in 1968 was best known for appearing in films like Jungle Book (1994), Operation Dumbo Drop (1995) and Water of Elephants (2011). This female elephant appeared in about eight Hollywood films. She also appeared in a music video from Britney Spears in 2008. The appearance of Tai in the music album titled ‘Circus’ made some controversies too.

Mitzi: The female Dolphin who played the title role in MGM’s 1963 family film Flipper that gave birth to the popular spin-off series. This cute, well trained lady dolphin was born on 1958. She passed away in 1972 due to a heart attack at the age of 14.

Bart The Bear: This huge 9.5 foot bear was born in 1977 in Alaska. He appeared in several Hollywood films in the period between 1980 and 2000. World famous actors like Anthony Hopkins, Ethan Hawke, Brad Pitt, Alec Baldwin and Steven Segal have shared screen space with Bart. He appeared in about eleven films and three television shows. He passed away at the age of 23 due to cancer.

Crystal: This Capuchin monkey born in 1994 appeared in about 20 films. She is owned by ‘Birds and Animals Unlimited’, who is the largest furnisher of animals to Hollywood. She became parts of world famous movies like ‘The Hangover Part 2’ and ‘Zookeeper’.
