Firefly Solar Boat Works on Solar Power

Have you imagined a boat which runs entirely on solar power at a cost of only $2900? Yes! It is possible. Dan Baker from Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada, has constructed an eco-friendly boat to sail around the Fraser Lake, British Columbia.

In 2010 the first Firefly was made and powered by two rolling motors and a car charger. But later, he modified the firefly into a sustainable boat which is 100% solar powered. This six-seater boat is powered by two brushless DC electric motors that are mounted on each rear corner.

The solar panel, mounted on the top of the boat, provides up to 140W of renewable electric power. The speed of the boat is 4mph for up to six miles.

The Firefly also features a Bluetooth stereo with 2 built in speakers and 2 forward firing + subwoofer, navigation light, spreader lights with strobe function, strip Light LEDs in canopy top and handrails. The boat comprises of a marine safety kit, fire extinguisher, air horn, lifejackets, deck seating – 2 lounge chairs, removable swim ladder and beverage holders.

It is named Firefly because of the 900 LED lights that are sited on the top of the pontoon that provides the effect of a firefly in the night.
