Celebrities Who Strive to Make Mother Earth Greener

Celebrities, most often, take the flak for their extravagant life style. But not all of them are the same. There are many celebrities who shower love on the environment and nature around them. These stars use their fame and wealth to raise awareness on various social issues and also support many eco projects. Let’s take a look. 

Gisele Bundchen

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is a well known face in the green world with her work on ecological conservation and education. The Clean Water Project she has launched aims to restore vegetation and microbasins in her hometown of Horizontina, Brazil. As the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program, she has also visited theAfrica. Harvard’s Center for Health and Global Environment named her Global Environmental Citizen in 2011. She was also selected the Best Green International Celebrity in December via an online poll.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Apart from acting, Titanic sweetheart Leonardo DiCaprio is an environmentalist, who has co-written, produced, and narrated the film on global warming The 11th Hour. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation works for a variety of environmental and humanitarian issues like forest conservation, healthy oceans, clean water access, and renewable energy. He also serves as a member of different environmental organizations including the Natural Resources Defense Council, Global Green USA, World Wildlife Fund and the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Edward Norton

The Incredible Hulk star and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Edward Norton is widely known for his work on the BP Solar Neighbors Program, which matches each celebrity purchase of a solar-energy home with solar panels for a low-income family home. The actor also hosts a National Geographic series named Strange Days on Planet Earth. He has also extended supported to ‘The Wilderness Society and Earthjustice’ and has been an active member of Friends of the High Line, a group campaigns to save and rebuild green space inNew York City.

Brad Pitt

Longtime environmentalist and founder of Make It Right Foundation, Brad Pitt took efforts to build 150 homes inNew Orleanswhich can withstand winds and floods.

He has donated more than $5 million to this project alone and, through the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. The multitalented actor also campaign for various other natural resources and wildlife conservation campaigns.

Al Gore

The former Vice President of theUSis famous for his green credentials. He was the winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize and the co-founder of Live Earth, a series of benefit concerts that raise funds for sustainability projects. His world famous documentary on Global Warming “An Inconvenient Truth,” had earned critical acclaim even in the Oscar. 

Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan, nicknamed Best-Dressed Environmentalist, always stands for Sustainable Style Foundation. He worked for numerous groups including the Natural Resources Defense Council, California Coastal Protection Network and Sea Shepherd. His efforts in raising awareness about illegal whale hunting and wetlands protection lead him into the Environmental Hall of Fame. He also lent his voice for documentaries such as Oceans and Lethal Sounds.

Jamie Oliver

As a well-known chef through his TV shows Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and Jamie’s American Road Trip, he advocated healthy eating and the sustainable farming and sourcing of food. The chef’s American Road Trip is the first fully carbon neutral TV show in the US and it is audited by carbon companies Best Foot Forward and Green Party. The profits were distributed to various initiatives inIndiaandChina, which promote solar energy projects. He owns a restaurant inLondonwhich is powered by wind turbines.

Cate Blanchett

Actor and co-artistic directors of the Sydney Theater Company Cate Blanchett and her husband, Andrew Upton, were the main supporters of the project, Greening the Wharf. This project initiates to install around 1,900 solar panels at The Wharf Theatre at Sydney’s Walsh Bay. The theatre has now turned into completely carbon neutral with 70% of the electrical requirements is fulfilled by solar panels. 

Daryl Hannah

Kill Bill fame Hannah is proved herself as an environmentalist. She has been even arrested for protesting against mountaintop mining inWest Virginia; and for joining demonstrations against the Keystone oil pipeline in front of the White House last year. The bold actress also produces a weekly video blog on green lifestyles called DH Love Life. Hannah also grows her own food and runs an online business, which sells eco-friendly products. 

Adrian Grenier

Adrian Grenier recently got recognized from Global Green USA and Opportunity Green for his work on SHFT. It is a website that advocates green living through traditional and social media. He also hosts the show Alter Eco on the channel Planet Green, where he speaks about the changes people can make to be kinder to the environment. Grenier only drives a Prius and owns a solar-powered home in Brooklyn, New York.
