Two days ago, when Flight AC991 from Toronto to Mexico Citytook off, it generated at least 40 per cent fewer emissions. Wonder why? Thanks to the jet fuel derived from recycled cooking oil and through other fuel-saving measures, this flight is now being termed the most environmentally-friendly flight ever flown by Air Canada.
The flight was done in showcasing the aviation industry’s commitment to greener transportation. The plane was an Airbus 319 and clearly it has cut down emissions by 40% which at an earlier point of time was considered to be an impossible target that can be achieved.
Fabrice Bregier, president and CEO of Airbus, said that the flight with Air Canada establishes the aviation industry’s strong position in reducing emissions.
The flight was part of an environmental initiative by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to work simultaneously with Rio+20, a United Nations sustainable development conference taking place in Rio de Janeiro.
With the ever increasing oil prices and the problems it cause, biofuels are becoming a more appealing alternative for airlines as they want to keep their expenditure to the minimum at all costs.
