Retailers in Dubai are trying to adopt eco-friendly measures in their mall fit-outs to reduce the impact of commercial output on the environment. The retailers are highly interested in the green star system which rates design and construction projects according to the level of their green properties.
As a part to encourage the retailers to meet sustainable environmental solutions, a firm called Majid Al Futtaim Properties is developing a database of sustainable suppliers for Dubai in and out of Europe.
According to the Nicholas Mulders, the director of the Retail Design and Deliver of Majid Al Futtaim Properties, they are trying to share the experience, knowledge and the understanding they can be involved.
The Green Star program is one in which retailers have fit outs that will have a minimal impact on the environment and to reach at that level, retailers have to meet a short list of rating categories ranging from water and energy to materials and operations. The more energy-efficient accessories and equipment are implemented, the higher the Green Star rating of the retailer.
While establishing a new mall retail outlet, a wide variety of items can be used to achieve sustainability which varies from low-flow faucets and energy-efficient light bulbs to low-volatile paint and self-closing electrical equipment.
The Emirates Green Building Council recognized these efforts as a tool to understand the environmental effects and make the malls greener.
