There is innovation in every aspect of life and Indian Army wants theirs in every field – including the disposal of human waste. The new toilet gadget named the ‘bio-digester’ offers 100% functionality in the hardest weather conditions and is quite a useful one.
This new toilet tech is one of the 200 technologies produced by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) identified as for sale via the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
As part of Premier Manmohan Singh’s pledge in 2008 to offer defence technology byproducts to the public, the national trade body and DRDO in October devised a 4year partnership to monger dual-use military products.
The “bio-digester” is among 10 of the DRDO products that are being provided for sale to state governments and private companies, an Indian defence ministry official added.
The ‘bio-digester’ toilet manufactured by DRDO, works by blending regenerative bacteria with human waste in specially made tanks. This results in the production of methane gas and water.
FICCI’s Saxena has been quoted as saying the Indian territory of Lakshadweep will be arranging 12,000 bio-digesters at around Rs 25,000 ($550) a unit for a major housing project.
Thus the sales of bio-digester toilets have marked a wonderful start in no time. The effort that people put into for the development of eco-friendly products that can be used for day-to-day activities is quite amazing and is surely appreciable.
