Green Seminar to Highlight Impact of Construction Industry on Environment

A seminar aimed at highlighting the impact of the construction industry on local resources and environment will be soon get underway in Bahrain. The seminar titled ‘Promoting Green construction in Bahrain’, organized by the Institution of Engineers Pakistan-Bahrain Chapter (IEP-BC) in association with the Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE) is slated for Tuesday 27 December 2011, 7 pm at the Bahrain Society of Engineers Auditorium, Juffair.

Two presentations planned for the seminar – ‘Construction and Environment’ and ‘Green Construction and FIDIC (Fédération Internationale Des Ingénieurs-Conseils, French for the International Federation of Consulting Engineers)’, will be delivered by experts.

 “The construction industry plays a major role in improving the quality of the built environment, but it also impacts the local resources and environment on the wider scale,” said Bahrain’s Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife, Waste Disposal Unit Directorate of Environmental Control Head Eng. Rehan Ahmed.

“Judiciously utilizing the finite resources and considering ‘green construction’ and ‘green building materials and products’ can promote conservation of our dwindling non-renewable resources,” he pointed out.

“The first presentation will highlight the role of construction sector in utilization of resources and the environmental impacts associated with the development,” said Ahmed, who is also the presenter of the topic.

Preparation and implementation of ‘Construction Environmental Management and Monitoring Plans’ is now a must for major developmental projects in the country, opined Ahmed. The factors and parameters considered will be elaborated in the presentation, he said.

Bahrain’s Trowers & Hamlins Construction Manager Paula Boast will highlight green construction priorities for Bahrain projects, considering FIDIC contracts, history and principles of green construction in the second presentation.

Adapting FIDIC contracts to meet green construction principles and requirements, buy in to green construction – employers, contractors and consultants and applicability of green construction inBahrain will also be part of the presentation.
