Samsung Gets Greener; Two Eco-friendly ODDs Added to Eco-Friendly Line Up

Corporates seems to have found a new vocation, and they are serious about it too. Toeing the line of many of their peers, Samsung too has stepped on to green terrain in a major way. We have seen many a product that spelt eco-friendliness coming out of the company’s stables. The latest that fall in the green group are two optical drives: a new slim portable Blu-ray writer and a wireless smart media hub. Interestingly, both the products are extremely eco-friendly, showing the concern of the Korean company for the planet.

samsungblurayeriter The SE-506AB USB Portable Blu-ray Writer comes with a sleek and compact design. The hi-glossy anti-scratch surfaced drive is 12 percent smaller than the traditional Samsung Blu-ray drives.

Samsung’s AV connectivity technology will allow the users to plug and play easily to their multimedia TV with USB port. This new drive can recognize and access the fifth sub-directory and more than 3000 files.

The external drive can write at different speeds with BD Quadruple layering. The varying speeds come in at: 6X BD-ROM, 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW reading and 6X BD-R, 6X BD-R Dual layer, 4X BD-R Quad layer, 8X DVD±R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD+R Dual layer, 6X DVD-R Dual layer, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW recording.

Meanwhile the second product, the SE-208BW Wireless Smart Media Hub acts as a CD/DVD writer with wireless connectivity. This new drive enables you to can connect to your smartphones, tablets and PCs through the Samsung APP. It allows you to enjoy music and videos and provides back up for the data in your devices.

The wireless access point and repeater functionality to connect the drive to an Ethernet LAN cable is something new to ODDs. The Dynamic DNS allows the drive to work as a private server. With the DLNA support TV, you can play and record the multimedia files in the drive. The slim and sleek ODD is enclosed in a hi-glossy case and measures 140 mm x 21.5 mm x 200 mm.

The writer offers a variety of writing speeds: 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD reading and 8X DVD±R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD+R Dual Layer, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW recording.

Both the devices have many common features. They are easily compatible with all the major operating systems, including Windows 7 and Mac OS. The USB power interface makes it easy to plug and use, thereby eliminating the separate electrical outlet. By the Buffer Under Run technology, you can write errorless at high speeds and do PC multitasking.

The $140 Portable Blu-ray Writer is now available whereas the Wireless Smart Media Hub will be seen in the beginning of next year – no price details yet.

Both are eco-friendly, thereby offering low power consumption and lead-free soldering technology. The products are manufactured according to the company’s Eco-design evaluation system, created in 2004.

This system includes three categories: resource efficiency, environmental hazardousness and energy efficiency. The environmental quality management system ensures the raw materials used are recyclable.

The company is also taking more steps like partnerships with retailers, NGO’s, EPA and DoE and green power, e-cycling and Energy Star efforts. The HD TVs, LCD TVs, mobile phones and home appliances are some other eco-friendly products from Samsung. Don’t you think Samsung is on the right green track?
