Most of us have heard about hybrid buses, but one with fast charging potency might be rare. The world’s first fast charging hybrid “Arctic Whisper” has been revealed at Umea, a city in northern Sweden. The bus has rolled out as a result of the joint venture between Hybricon, Opbrid, e-Traction and Umea City Corporation.
The hybrid is a perfect brew of electric and diesel technology, but has the knack to run on battery alone, with its diesel generator completely turned off. e- Traction and Hybricon took only 6 weeks to revamp a Volvo 7700 into a perfect diesel hybrid.
The bus comes with 100kWh Li-ion battery packs that offer 1 to 3 hours of electric functionality. The Arctic Whisper can be charged from Opbrid’s rapid charging overhead station, and it returns an operational charge up to 18 hours.
The charging process is automated. The driver never will have to leave the bus, that is. Batteries are fully charged at night, and the charging station supplies the additional juice for full day electric cruise.
Testing procedures are being undertaken currently , while a second edition is also in the offing. In the meantime, here’s a video that explains the rapid charging system.
