Toyota would begin making its flagship Prius hybrid sedan in Thailand at an existing plant of the company. This is the major mass production venture of the gas-electric hybrid vehicle outside the company’s home country Japan. The production is supposed to commence in late November. The plant which is located about 110 kilometers southeast of Bangkok, has the capacity to make 200,000 units a year of such sedans as the Camry, Camry Hybrid and Corolla models.
The company does not have plans to raise this capacity. It will make an unspecified number of Prius cars initially at the plant for supply, says a Reuters report on this development. The Yen’s rise to a 15-year high against the dollar is making the manufacturers to consider shifting more output outside Japan.
The currency issue is threatening the competitiveness of items of export from Japan. Toyota is also considering halting exports from Japan of the Corolla sedan from 2013 onwards.
