There have been complaints rising from various corners of the world about this silent mode of hybrid cars. These were especially related with the blind pedestrians, who find their path on the roads only depending on the ambient sounds. So, when the motor of the car running around is silent it can definitely cause danger.
The popularity of hybrid cars is increasing rapidly and in Japan, Toyota’s hybrid model Prius is to become the top selling car within one year. As per a report by the Japanese government and the US auto safety agency, these silent cars can cause accidents at slow speeds than the cars with conventional engines.
Toyota, following this report, is offering a new solution for the issue. Although not as a standard feature, the company has come out with an option which offers a speaker system for the vehicle’s customers in Japan. After the attachment of this speaker system, the car will produce a whirring sound which can alert the pedestrians about the presence of the quiet car. The device will be turned on every time the car stars, but can be switched off as per the driver’s choice.
The device is available for most recent generation Prius and will be offered with new hybrid models that roll out from the company. This speaker system is available for customers at a price which is almost equivalent to $150 (12600 yen).
The decision made by Toyota is clearly a good and sensible one as we can see that quiet cars are really hazardous for the pedestrians, especially the blind ones. But it could have made more sense if it would have been a default standard feature of the car.
